In 1950 a group of nineteen local citizens, businessmen, and leaders of the Youngsville community felt a civic duty to improve their community and help its citizens. The group members made a decision to apply for a Lions Club International membership. A charter was granted in October of 1950 to form the Youngsville Lions Club, now called the Youngsville Lions Club.
Lions Club International
Lions Club International is the world’s largest International Service Organization. The organization is the world’s largest service club organization, with over one million four hundred thousand members in approximately forty-six thousand clubs in more than two hundred countries and geographical areas worldwide.
Lions Clubs
Lions Clubs are doing community volunteer work, helping to meet the needs of communities on both a local and global scale. Because the Lions Clubs are local, they can serve the unique needs of their communities. And because they are global, they can address challenges that go beyond their borders.
The Motto of the Youngsville Lions Club is “We Serve”
Although Lions Club International has many great causes, the Youngsville Lions Club focuses on two areas. Throughout the year, fundraisers are held to raise money that is donated to the Youngsville Lions Club’s two main programs, The Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation and the Louisiana Lions Camp.
Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation
With the help of the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation, which supports and promotes eye health, the Youngsville Lions Club assists many people in the community by providing free or low-cost eye exams and eyeglasses to those in need. Over the years, the Youngsville Lions Club has helped many citizens of Youngsville and surrounding areas by providing eye exams and eyeglasses, working toward the mission of “Providing Vision For All”.
Louisiana Lions Camp
The Louisiana Lions Camp is a non-profit residential summer camp that is owned and operated by the Louisiana Lions League. The League is funded by the area Lions Club of Louisiana from District 8. The Louisiana Lions Camp is free for boys and girls in Louisiana with mental and physical challenges, diabetes, and pulmonary disorders. The Youngsville Lions Club has sponsored local children with special needs from the area to allow them to go to this camp each summer for an experience many would otherwise not have.
Support Local Organizations
The Youngsville Lions Club has supported many local organizations by volunteering their time, talents, and funds to local schools, churches, and to Lions Club International when needed.
Main Fundraiser
The main fundraiser each year is the annual “Youngsville Lions Gumbo Chili Cook-off”, usually held in November. A portion of the funds raised from this event is donated to the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation and to the Louisiana Lions Camp.
Donations
The Youngsville Lions Club has donated funds to Green T. Lindon Elementary and helped sponsor a rock garden that was built at the school. The club annually donates time and labor to Youngsville Middle School to assist them in raising funds for their school with their annual Barbeque Dinner Fundraiser.
One Project at a Time
As a club, the members are continuously helping people in Youngsville, one project at a time. Dedication and commitment are shown through the eyes of their members.
