Elizabeth Harper, Artist

By KAREN LAGRANGE COX

Elizabeth Harper is a unique individual with a distinctive style. Her beret, turquoise jewelry, and long dark hair are just a few of the things that set her apart from the crowd. She is confident and comfortable in her own skin, and her unique look is a reflection of her personality.

Harper is a talented artist and has been painting for over thirty years. Inspired by nature and wildlife, she feels connected to herself through nature. The first time she set eyes on a bayou was three years ago at the age of forty-three.

After coming to Lafayette, Louisiana three years ago, she felt a connection to the area. She found the locals, who call her “Cajunette”, to be warm, welcoming, and accepting.

As a folk artist, she loves painting scenes presenting Cajun life and culture. Much of her artwork is dedicated to the Cajun culture which she says has become woven into her life.

For the last three years, Harper has been a member of the Louisiana Crafts Guild. Her artwork is exhibited in galleries in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. She also brings her artwork to festivals.

The Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Moncus Park in Lafayette, has her on a permanent contract, according to Harper. She is there on Saturdays displaying her artwork to prospective buyers.

Being the creative type, Harper is intuitive in what she does; she does not do things that “fit in the box” as she proves with her motivational videos. Harper takes her motivational videos “with her”; in boxing rings, swamps, cemeteries, and other unusual places.

Aside from painting and motivational speaking, Harper provides private Latin dance instruction and art lessons in homes.

Born in Nicaragua, she went to Baton Rouge at eight years old and was raised there. She has also lived in Miami, Florida.
