Home Owners in Support of Barricades on South Bernard

by KAREN LAGRANGE COX

On January 12, 2023, a car crashed into the home of Rob Bunch, who lives on Overbrook Drive in Broussard, Louisiana. Bunch spoke at the April 9, 2023, Broussard City Council meeting in support of the introduction of Ordinance #23-765, which would amend the 2022/2023 Operating Budget of Revenues and Expenditures for $40,700. This ordinance is to provide eleven hundred feet of barricades on South Bernard Road. The ordinance was approved, with one council member voting against the ordinance. The ordinance was later adopted at the April 23, 2023 council meeting, with all council members present voting to adopt the ordinance.

Bunch told council members on April 9, 2023 that he heard blood-hurling screams from his wife when the car hit their house. According to Broussard Police, the car was driven by Brittany Nicol of Carencro, who had left South Bernard Road and hit the back of Bunch’s house. Nicol was reportedly driving with no automobile insurance. The car was going north, crossed lanes, and crashed into the house.

Bunch and Ashley Landry, who also lives on Overbrook Drive, support placing barricades along South Bernard Road to help prevent a car from hitting another house on that route. The backs of their houses face South Bernard Road. Both Bunch and Landry are concerned about speeding on South Bernard Road. And Bunch said he thinks there could have been better planning for the road.

It’s been a tough time for Bunch ever since his house got hit by Nicol’s car. Unfortunately, Nicol reportedly drove without automobile insurance when Bunch’s house was hit, so he has had to file a claim on his house insurance. He and his wife had to move out of their home on Overbrook Drive while repairs are being done. They were hoping to be back in their house by now. But it seems like it will take several more months before everything is settled with his insurance company and the repairs are completed. It’s been a long and difficult process, but Bunch is hopeful everything will work out in the end.
