*Update/Correction – As originally reported (The driver attempted to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection causing the crossing guards to get stuck to his truck.) Through further investigation it was determined that the crossing guards were already down and the driver of the 18-wheeler went around them in an attempt to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection.

Major Vehicle Crash Involving a Train and 18-Wheeler
Lafayette, LA – Lafayette Police Officers are on the scene of a major vehicle crash involving a train and an 18-wheeler. The crash occurred in the 700 block of E. Verot School Road around 7:01 a.m. The accident occurred when the driver of the 18-wheeler approached the railroad tracks located at the intersection of E. Verot School Road at Hwy 90. The crossing guards for the railroad track were coming down as the driver the driver of the 18-Wheeler approached. The driver attempted to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection causing the crossing guards to get stuck to his truck. The 18-wheeler was unable to make it fully across before the train collided with it. At this time no injuries have been reported. We are asking people to avoid the intersection of Verot School Road at Hwy. 90 and find an alternate route if possible. Verot School Road at Hwy 90 will be closed until further notice.
