Support for LA Main Street Program Approved at Council Meeting

By KAREN LAGRANGE COX

During the Broussard City Council meeting tonight, a resolution was passed declaring support for the Louisiana Main Street Lagniappe Program in the City of Broussard. This program, which falls under Main Street America, utilizes a four-point system that includes Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization.

Millicent Norbert, Tourism Director for the City of Broussard made a presentation before the Council about the program. The program would focus on what Broussard has and not what it does not have in the City. Norbert advised there would be no costs to the City with the exception of her own salary as Tourism Director.

During the council meeting, members of the board for the Valsin Broussard House were present. This historic two-story house was built in 1876 and is on the National Register of Historic Places [source]. The house is located at 408 West Main Street and is set to transform into the City of Broussard’s new Welcome Center, as part of their tourism initiative. The City was named after Broussard, who was the City’s founder. Broussard was a prominent local merchant; when his store was robbed, he form the first vigilante committee.
