Last week, Huya Craft Coffee in Youngsville, Louisiana, posted on its Facebook page that it fell victim to a short change (also called a quick change) scam. Huya lost $140 to the scammer exploiting one of its staff members.

A short change scam works when the customer (scammer) pays for a small item with a large bill ($50, $100). While the cashier is counting out the change, the scammer says they can pay with a smaller bill. This can confuse the cashier, who not only makes change for the larger bill but also hands it back to the scammer. [source]

This morning Huya posted the following update regarding last week’s theft in which one of its customers approached the business and gave Huya $140 to cover its loss from the week before.

“While we have not found the thief’s identity, we have discovered the kindness of wonderful people in our community. While working at our second location, a customer approached us after seeing our post about the theft. They were compelled to do something, and although they wish to remain anonymous, we want to acknowledge their incredible generosity.

You know who you are—you touched our hearts deeply. This amazing person generously gave us the amount that was stolen. In their honor, we will announce a special way to pay their kindness forward. Stay tuned for updates.

We love you all. Thank you for your unwavering support.
