Broussard, LA (May 16, 2025) – Phase II of Envision Downtown Broussard, the City of Broussard’s Main Street Corridor Master Plan, is underway. This phase of the project is along Main Street from Clara Street through Historic Downtown to St. Des Porres Street. Once all phases of the project are completed, the center of downtown Broussard should look like the image above.

Those driving or walking on Main Street will see that the old sidewalks have been dug out and replaced with newer, wider sidewalks. Lamp posts are being placed along the sidewalks.

On Main and Railroad Streets, work is being done to restructure that sharp corner into a 90-degree turn, for safety purposes.

“I’m excited to see work being done on the final phase of the project. Construction is currently underway on Phase 2 along Main Street, through the heart of downtown Broussard. This is the most complex part of the project, due to upgrading utilities. This section of Main Street will have multi-use sidewalks, enhanced lighting, and improved drainage. The Main Street/Morgan Avenue intersection will be reconstructed and updated. The pavement at the intersection will be stamped with the famous Broussard gears, reminding residents of the old sugar mill in town. All businesses will remain open during construction, while the intersection is closed for construction.” – Mayor Ray Bourque

Sidewalk
Sidewalk on the left; parking on the right. Parking is marked with a painted line between the sidewalk and parking area with corner lines marked for parking spaces.

As a reminder, motorists are prohibited from parking on the new sidewalks but encouraged to use the new parking spaces along Main Street. Sidewalks are for pedestrians to enjoy, and parking spaces are for cars as an additional convenience.

The project, designed by Duplantis Design Group (DDG), aims to redevelop the downtown area, attract economic development, add quality-of-life amenities for Broussard’s residents, and complete much-needed infrastructure upgrades. This historic project effort will be a game changer for improving and beautifying the downtown area along Main Street.

Phase I features Broussard’s gateway sign, welcoming you as you enter the city.  This phase also has “pedestrian rest stops” — featuring benches, water fountains, bike repair stations, bike racks, and trash receptacles, as well as multi-use sidewalks, upgraded lighting, and drainage. This section is from the South Bernard Road/Main Street intersection to Clara Street. This phase is complete.

Phase III, between the railroad tracks and Albertson Parkway, has enclosed drainage on both sides of the road, additional street parking, multi-use sidewalks, and enhanced street lighting along the entire stretch.
