Baton Rouge, LA (February 5, 2026) – On Tuesday, February 3, Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., spoke to members of the Logansport Chamber of Commerce. Among other topics, Dr. Fleming discussed the functions of the Louisiana Department of the Treasury and reviewed his office’s notable accomplishments, including the return of unclaimed property to Louisiana residents.

During the meeting, State Treasurer Fleming was pleased to personally deliver an unclaimed property check to Shreveport native James Willett for $320,706.21 and another check for $79,982.26 for a trust on behalf of his son. Dr. Fleming was delighted to return these funds to Mr. Willett, the rightful owner, and make history for the state’s unclaimed property program. This presentation involved the largest unclaimed property check ever presented to a recipient by a Louisiana State Treasurer.

Although very few people will receive such a large check, State Treasurer Fleming reminds all Louisiana residents that there is $1.2 billion in unclaimed property to return.

Each year, businesses turn over millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities, and insurance proceeds to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office. These assets are known as “unclaimed property” and can include payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds.

All Louisiana residents should visit LaCashClaim.org to check whether they have unclaimed property. According to Dr. Fleming, “One in six individuals in Louisiana has unclaimed property, with claims averaging $900. It is your money; we want you to claim it.”
