YOUNGSVILLE, LA (July 3, 2024) – The Youngsville Police Department (YPD) is cautioning local businesses due to an increase in “short change scams” in the area. These scams involve a customer purchasing a small item with a large bill or asking for change for a large bill and then attempting to confuse the cashier through rapid money exchanges and diversionary conversations.

The customer will quickly pocket some money and then tell the cashier they were given the incorrect amount. Please make your cashiers aware of this.

A good practice is not to break any large bills, count out the change in front of the customer twice before handing them the cash, and take your time with cash transactions to ensure the correct change is given.

If this occurs at your business, please report it to the Youngsville Police Department at (337) 856-5931.
