Lafayette Parish Council Member / Chairman of the Parish Council Josh Carlson has provided some 2023 second-quarter highlights of accomplishments for District 3, the City of Lafayette, and Lafayette Parish.
Financial
Sales tax revenue for the City of Layette has seen an increase for the 2022-2023 fiscal year compared to the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Carlson pointed out the previous fiscal year had a historically high year in sales tax revenues. Sales tax revenue for April through June of 2023 is $398,375, higher than sales tax revenue received during the same period in 2022.
Drainage
Work was paused on homewood detention ponds; however, work has resumed on the ponds and nearing completion. The ponds will help with localized flood mitigation and will help lower the Vermilion River and its channels by about a foot during heavy rains.
Roads & Ditches
The Le Neuville Road Overlay Project has just been completed as an intergovernmental project. Le Neuville Road is located in the City of Broussard, the City of Youngsville, and the unincorporated Lafayette Parish.
There is an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Broussard and Lafayette Parish for work to be done on Garber Road, located in Broussard and in unincorporated Lafayette Parish. The road work will consist of repairing, reconstruction, resurfacing, and a bridge replacement.
Fire Protection
The Lafayette Parish budget is coming up but is not yet finalized. Carlson expects a significant increase in the funding for fire protection that will be given to various local fire departments that help with fire protection in unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish.
