Elderly Man Escapes House Fire

LAFAYETTE, La. (Jan. 4, 2024) – At 8:28 p.m. last night (January 3, 2024), Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Iantha Street. As firefighters arrived on scene, the front of the house was engulfed in flames. The occupant, an elderly man, was outside. He advised first responders that the fire originated in his bedroom. He escaped the home without any injuries.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within fifteen minutes. The home sustained heavy fire damage. The fire also damaged the neighbor’s car and house. American Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupant.

Fire officials determined the fire originated in the bedroom. Several electrical appliances were plugged into the area of origin, including a space heater. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
