LAFAYETTE, La. ( Jan. 14, 2024) – In response to the imminent below-freezing temperatures, Lafayette Consolidated Government is opening a warming center to provide refuge for individuals experiencing homelessness or who lack adequate heat. Working in coordination with Catholic Charities of Acadiana and other community partners, this collaborative effort works to ensure the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable members of our community during this extreme weather event.

Those needing warm shelter can present at St. Joseph Diner on 613 W. Simcoe Street in Lafayette starting at noon on Monday, January 15, 2024, to be transported to the prepared LCG warming center or present in person at the Dupuis Recreation Center at Brown Park at 1234 East Pont Des Mouton Road in Lafayette, beginning at noon Warming centers will remain open until Wednesday when temperatures rise above the freezing mark. Public transportation will be provided from St. Joseph Diner from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

Do not forget to prepare your homes. Protect your loved ones, pets, and plants. Freezing pipes will be a concern. Consider the following steps to protect your pipes:

  • Do not drip/run water from your faucets.
  • Wrap exposed pipes with insulation outside and underneath the home (if above ground).
  • Cover outdoor faucets.
  • Protect any water pipes that run throughout the attic.
  • Disconnect and drain any outside water hoses.
  • Maintain a home temperature no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors under sinks, especially if along an outside wall, to allow heat to circulate around uninsulated pipes.
  • If away from home, it is suggested to turn off the water at the hand-cut-off valve and drain pipes.

If you experience a burst pipe or have water issues, please call LUS at (337) 291-5740. If you experience a power outage, please call LUS at (337) 291-9200. If you experience any roadway emergency, call 911.
