February 14 is National Donor Day, which aims to increase awareness about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation. Valentine’s Day is an ideal occasion to recognize and appreciate the individuals who have given the gift of life through donation. It is also an excellent opportunity to discuss your decision to become an organ and tissue donor with your family. If you haven’t already, show your love by registering as an organ and tissue donor and commit to saving and healing lives.

On November 14th, 2023, the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA) achieved a new organizational record for the number of organs transplanted in a single day. Four donor heroes donated eighteen organs, saving the lives of fourteen people. This record-breaking day followed an all-time high of thirty-eight donors in October 2023.

Facts

Louisiana is home to eight hundred ninety-eight donor heroes in 2023. From these donor heroes, seven hundred twenty-five organs were transplanted successfully, along with thousands of bone and tissue grafts used to treat various diseases and conditions. These include heart surgeries, orthopedic surgeries, burn treatment, and wound care.

There are over two thousand people in Louisiana waiting on life-saving organ transplants and thousands more in need of healing treatments via donated tissue.

If you would like to share the love and register as an organ, tissue, and eye donor, please visit www.lopa.org/registry.
