ORIGINAL

LAFAYETTE, La. – On February 13, 2024, at 4:57 p.m., officers from the Lafayette Police Department (LPD) responded to the 1200 block of South Sterling Street about a motor vehicle crash involving four vehicles and two pedestrians.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Vehicle 1 was traveling on South Sterling Street when it struck a parked car. This impact caused Vehicle 2 to pin one of the pedestrians between it and Vehicle 3 and strike the second pedestrian, and then cause Vehicle 3 to hit Vehicle 4. Vehicles 2, 3, and 4 were parked and unoccupied during the crash. Pedestrian 1 was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Pedestrian 2 was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

There were six unrestrained juveniles in Vehicle 1 at the time of the crash, and all six were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Impairment is a factor in the crash. Driver 1 showed signs of impairment and was transported to the Lafayette Police Department and submitted to a proper breath sample. The result of that sample was 0.113 g% BAC. Driver 1 was arrested and booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, 1st offense (with child endangerment), First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring, Vehicular Negligent Injuring (six counts), Child Passenger Restraint (six counts), and Careless Operation with Crash.

The Lafayette Police Department’s Traffic Unit is still investigating this crash. As LPD Traffic Investigators make their findings, they will release additional information.
