LAFAYETTE, LA (May 2, 2024) – At 3:43 a.m., Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 700 block of Elizabeth Avenue. Lafayette police officers noticed the fire in the area. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the dwelling was fully involved. First responders protected the homes next door from the impinging flames. The structure fire was brought under control within fifteen minutes. The home sustained heavy fire damage. The two neighboring homes sustained minor fire damage.

Fire officials determined the home was vacant and without utility services. The neighbors reported that it had not been occupied in over ten years, and vagrants had been seen entering and leaving it recently.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
