LAFAYETTE, LA (October 3, 2024) – The close working relationship between the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) and local law enforcement proved invaluable on Thursday as Carencro Police Chief David Anderson swiftly responded to a potential safety threat near Carencro Middle School.

Just before school dismissal, the Carencro Police Department received a call regarding an incident at an apartment complex located near the school. Recognizing the potential risk to students and faculty, he promptly notified LPSS leadership and recommended that a shelter-in-place protocol be enacted until officers could assess the situation.

In response, the LPSS team acted quickly, communicating with Carencro Middle School officials, bus drivers, and parents to ensure everyone was informed and safe. Within approximately 20 minutes, Chief Anderson was able to reassure school leadership that the situation had been resolved and there was no danger to students.

LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. commended the collaborative effort, stating, “Thankfully, the chief recognized that what happens in the community may affect our students. Our relationship with Chief Anderson and all Lafayette Parish law enforcement serves as one more level of safety for the children in our care.”

This incident underscores the importance of proactive communication and collaboration between educational institutions and law enforcement agencies. The LPSS remains committed to prioritizing student safety and maintaining strong partnerships with local authorities.

LPSS encourages all parents to download and install the J-Campus app on their smartphones.
