BROUSSARD, LA (November 13, 2024) – During the Broussard City Council meeting on November 12, 2024, Police Chief Vance Olivier awarded the Medal of Valor to Officers Grant Burris and Cole Mouton.

On May 14, 2024, at 9:42 p.m., Burris and Mouton distinguished themselves and their profession by acting quickly and without hesitation in the service of their community.
During a severe weather event, Burrisn and Mouston were dispatched to the 100 block of Loul Street. A tree had fallen onto a house, trapping an elderly resident. Upon the officers’ arrival, the tree was wrapped in powerlines and resting in the center of the house.
Both officers negotiated a small fence surrounding the residence without hesitation. Burris immediately entered the residence through an open bedroom window to assist a family member with removing the resident from the home. Mouton remained outside near the bedroom window, clearing debris for a safe exit.
Burris quickly noted an overwhelming smell of natural gas emitting from the room, indicating an active leak. Burris continued his efforts to remove the resident from the home while placing his own life in danger. Ultimately, Burris and Mouton safely removed the elderly resident from the house without injury.
Burris and Mouton’s actions on this date were above and beyond the scope of their duties and were done without hesitation to protect members of this community.
