WASHINGTON (January 8, 2025) – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will grant Louisiana $117,946,000.00 in Hurricane Francine relief. The funding comes through Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) grants.
“We had a rough hurricane season. Hurricane Francine devastated a lot of families, but Louisianans and Americans are resilient,” said Dr. Cassidy. “This is one of the first steps in helping communities recover, small businesses reopen, and families get back on their feet.”
This announcement comes after Cassidy joined the entire Louisiana Congressional delegation in urging President Biden to approve Governor Landry’s request for an expedited major disaster declaration in response to Hurricane Francine.
Background
At the end of the last Congress, the Senate passed Cassidy’s bill to provide tax relief for Americans impacted by Hurricane Francine, sending it to the president’s desk. Cassidy also introduced the Restoring an Economic Lifeline with Immediate Emergency Funding (RELIEF) Act to replenish the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Program, which had run out of money in mid-October.
Shortly after the storm hit, Cassidy also took to the U.S. Senate floor to demand a swift federal response to Hurricane Francine and to urge Congressional action to make the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) affordable again. Cassidy released a sweeping new report on the dire state of NFIP late last year.
