Broussard, LA (June 3, 2025) – Mayor Ray Bourque announced that the City of Broussard received a check of approximately $2.4 million from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD).
The payment was for the rightsizing of Main Street through the Road Transfer Program. The LA DOTD payment to Broussard completes the process of the city taking over Main Street from the state, relieving the state of any liability for the road.
Bourque advised that the rightsizing of Main Street began around 2020, with a total amount of $3.2 million received by the city from the state for the project.
What is Rightsizing?
Right-sizing is the process of providing ownership of an older state highway or sections of it within a local jurisdiction to that local jurisdiction. Funds are provided, either by cash or by credit, by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) to the local jurisdiction to make improvements to put the older highway in good condition. Right-sizing also relieves the state of liability for the highway.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) provides funds to the local jurisdiction—either in cash or as credit—to make improvements necessary to elevate the highway to a good standard. Additionally, right-sizing removes the state’s liability for the highway.
