Lafayette, LA (September 11, 2025) – The Lafayette Parish School System is proud to announce that several local students have been named Semifinalists in the prestigious 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. These outstanding high school seniors are among the top scorers nationwide and now have the opportunity to compete for National Merit Scholarships totaling nearly $26 million.

Lafayette Parish Semifinalists include:

  • Early College Academy – Sophia Justice
  • Lafayette High School – Sophie Cheung, Spencer Croft, Ishan Kunada, Roan Menard
  • Ovey Comeaux High School – Kenzy Naquin
  • David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy – Caleb Melancon

Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. praised the students’ achievements, stating:
“These young men and women represent the very best of Lafayette Parish. Their hard work, dedication, and academic excellence make us proud, and we look forward to seeing the incredible opportunities that await them. They are living examples of our district’s commitment to growth, opportunity, culture, and safety.”

National Merit Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. About 95 percent are expected to advance to Finalist standing, and roughly half will earn the Merit Scholar® title.
