UL Lafayette faculty member honored with the 2026 Outstanding Early Career Award for leadership in audiology research and education

LAFAYETTE, LA, January 2026 – The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) has selected Dr. Anna Jilla, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as the 2026 recipient of the Outstanding Early Career Award.

Dean of College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Ani Kokobobo says, “Dr Anna Jilla’s work in advancing access in hearing healthcare exemplifies excellence in research and service. Her selection for the American Academy of Audiology Early Career Award is a tremendous and well-deserved honor.”

Since beginning her career, Dr. Jilla has distinguished herself as a leader in audiologic education, research, and service. She teaches several undergraduate and graduate courses annually and mentors PhD students. She has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, delivered over 50 national and international presentations, and conducted impactful research that has informed national hearing health policy.

“Reflecting on this honor,” Dr. Jilla says, “what I’m most proud of isn’t what I’ve accomplished alone—it’s the network of passionate people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. We’re all committed to improving patients’ quality of life and access to hearing healthcare.”

Dr. Jilla’s work has expanded access to effective hearing interventions, advances audiological research to support more effective care, and helps prepare the next generation to serve their communities. Her contributions reflect an enduring commitment to improve the lives of those impacted by hearing and communication challenges.

Dr. Ryan Nelson, Department Head of Communicative Disorders, adds, “Dr. Jilla’s work fits seamlessly into our department’s mission to identify and remove barriers so that everyone, regardless of where they live or their economic situation, can gain access to the care they need to fully participate in their communities. This award is further verification of her outstanding efforts.”

Dr. Jilla will be honored at the AAA Annual Convention and featured on a session panel discussion to share more about her accomplishments and lessons learned.

Dr. Anna Jilla, AuD, PhD, currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders. Her Research Interests include:  Population Hearing and Balance Health, Healthcare Policy and Accessibility, Innovative Care Models; Aging Topics in Audiology; Aural Rehabilitation in Older Adults; and Vestibular Diagnostics and Rehabilitation.
