Taking That First Step

Our ability to predict what we will feel in the future keeps us from doing things that can improve us.

For example, lying in your comfortable bed before bedtime, you think about what will happen if you get up at 5 am to walk and exercise in 30-degree weather. That means that you will have to break your sleep, get out of a warm bed, get dressed, and freeze while exercising. Nothing about this screams comfort or gives warm and fuzzy feelings. So it’s then we make the decision not to do it.

Our ability to do the things that don’t give us warm and fuzzy feelings separates the achievers from the non-achievers.

What are some things that you don’t want to do but can do today that will help get you better? Start with small things. Maybe it’s telling others good morning in spite of you’re not “a morning person.” Maybe it’s complementing a coworker that you have had a run-in with. Maybe it’s going for a short walk during your lunch break. The size step doesn’t matter as much as you taking the first step.
