Lafayette, LA (August 12, 2025) – Lafayette Parish School System Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr., is kicking off the 2025–26 school year with two clear priorities: building strong, meaningful relationships with students and reducing chronic absenteeism.
“When students feel their teachers truly care, they’re more likely to thrive—and more likely to come to school,” Touchet said. “Students cannot succeed and grow if they are not in the classroom.”
Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% or more of the days they are enrolled, regardless of the reason, including excused and unexcused absences, suspensions, and expulsions. LPSS recognizes that every day counts toward student growth and achievement, and absenteeism impacts not only academic progress but also social and emotional development.
“Our goal is simple,” Touchet continued. “Students cannot succeed and grow if they are not in the classroom. Attendance is the foundation for learning,” Touchet continued.
To assist in this effort, the district’s Child Welfare and Attendance Team is available to help educators, students, and families address barriers to attendance and re-engage learners who may be struggling. By pairing relationship-building with attendance initiatives, LPSS is working to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed in a safe, supportive environment.
“This year, we’re focused on making sure every child feels valued, connected, and excited to come to school,” Touchet said.
