The SLEMCO office building on Highway 90 in Lafayette, Louisiana. The utility company requested a variance for a proposed electrical substation in Youngsville.
The Youngsville City Council denied SLEMCO’s request for a variance to the city’s Land Use Regulations for a proposed electrical substation at 1029 Savoy Road during its April 9, 2026 meeting, following public opposition.
The proposed electrical substation was planned near Cypress Gardens subdivision.
SLEMCO sought the variance to construct the substation at the proposed location.
During the meeting, residents living near the site spoke against placing the substation near their neighborhood. Residents raised concerns about quality of life, noise, property values, and potential fire hazards, among other issues.
City officials acknowledged the need for additional electrical infrastructure to support growth in Youngsville. However, the council denied the request after considering public input and concerns about locating the substation near residential areas.
The five city council members unanimously denied the variance.
The project cannot move forward at the proposed location without the variance.
SLEMCO may revise its plans, consider an alternative location, or pursue other options moving forward.
