Lafayette Parish (June 1, 2026) – As the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway, local leaders across Lafayette Parish are encouraging residents to take steps now to prepare for potential storms and strengthen their homes against future disasters.
Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet is urging residents to make emergency plans, build supply kits, review insurance coverage, and stay connected to official information sources throughout hurricane season.
In Broussard, Mayor Ray Bourque highlighted the city’s recent participation in a hurricane preparedness tabletop exercise with Lafayette Consolidated Government. Representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Public Works Department, Broussard Fire Department, and Broussard Police Department joined emergency responders and agency stakeholders at the Broussard Emergency Operations Center to identify solutions to challenges that could arise before, during, and after a major storm. City officials said the exercise helped identify opportunities to further strengthen emergency preparedness and response efforts.
Meanwhile, Youngsville Mayor Ken Ritter is encouraging homeowners to take advantage of a new opportunity available to Lafayette Parish residents through the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. The program offers eligible homeowners grants of up to $10,000 to strengthen roofs and improve protection against hurricane damage. Registration for the grant lottery is open through June 19.
Together, the efforts reflect a parishwide commitment to preparedness, coordination, and resilience as communities across Lafayette Parish prepare for the months ahead.
“Hurricane season is a reality of life in South Louisiana, and preparation is one of the most important things we can do to protect our families and community,” Boulet said. “Now is the time to make a plan, gather supplies, review your insurance coverage, and stay connected to official information.”
The Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness continues to coordinate emergency planning, response, and recovery efforts throughout the parish while working closely with first responders, utility providers, public agencies, and community organizations.
