The Quilt of Valor® Foundation (QOVF) makes quilts for veterans in appreciation of their service and sacrifice in protecting the United States. QOVF was created and founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts and works “To cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”
For a veteran to receive a quilt, they need to be nominated.
Various groups throughout the country make quilts for veterans for QOVF. One such group is Bayou Quilters, registered with QOVF and serves the southern area of Louisiana. The group hopes to expand its area by working with other quilter groups to supply quilts to veterans.
Since the start of COVID-19 in 2020, about 1,500 quilts have been on the list for over two years; QOVF are working on awarding these quilts first. Bayou Quilters has three quilts left to make on its list, which is over two years old. It has twelve quilts to make in all. One of the local quilt recipients is a Vietnam veteran.
Sandra Cooper of New Iberia has been a member of Bayou Quilters for a year. Her husband is a veteran, an Army Ranger. When she first heard about QOFV, she wanted to participate in sewing quilts for veterans.
Cooper advises that fabric donations are being accepted and that the group is looking for drop-off locations. Anyone interested in donating fabric can email BayouQuilters@outlook.com.
