Cassidy Votes to Hold Full Impeachment Trial for Secretary Mayorkas

Submitted by United States Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana

WASHINGTON (Apr. 17, 2024) – United States Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today voted in favor of the U.S. Senate holding a full and transparent impeachment trial for U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas following the delivery of impeachment articles by the U.S. House of Representatives.

“For over 200 years, the Senate has considered evidence, heard witnesses, and voted on conviction when the House has sent articles of impeachment,” said Dr. Cassidy. “It would be a terrible historical precedent for Democrats not to a hold a trial. Let’s hear the evidence.”

Senate Democrats blocked the motion and voted to dismiss the charges.

The U.S. House of Representatives has sent impeachment articles to the U.S. Senate 21 times in U.S. history. Only four times in our country’s history has the U.S. Senate not held a full trial when receiving impeachment articles. In those cases, the four men in question either resigned or were expelled before being convicted. Secretary Mayorkas is the first cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1876.
