From the Newsroom of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry

NEW ORLEANS, LA (January 13, 2025) – Pursuant to Governor Landry’s Jan. 1, 2025 executive order, the State of Louisiana will work to secure state-maintained interstates, bridges, and transportation lines in addition to ensuring that public streets, sidewalks, and other right of ways in Orleans Parish are in clean, accessible and safe condition. This action will also provide emergency funding to assist unhoused persons living in public spaces around the Caesars Superdome, French Quarter, Interstate 10, and US 90. The temporary housing provided will utilize resources from GOHSEP, DCFS, LDH, LHA, LDVA, LDFW, LWC and other relevant state agencies.

“When I assumed office, I made a commitment to take on difficult issues. Rampant homelessness has been a longstanding challenge for Orleans Parish, and I refuse to continue ineffective and costly policies. With the recent ISIS terrorist attack, the Dec 8th fire under I-10, frigid temperatures, and the destruction of the riverfront streetcar line, it is in the best interest of every citizen’s safety and security to give the unhoused humane and safe shelter as we begin to welcome the world to the City of New Orleans for both Super Bowl LIX and Mardi Gras,” said Governor Landry.

The State of Louisiana is enacting the following measures:

  • The State of Louisiana through LHC & GOHSEP is opening ‘The Transitional Center’ at 5601 France Road.
  • Citizens that have jobs but who are unhoused will be prioritized for housing vouchers and wrap-around services. Those who are utilizing state and parish resources but who have means will be given bus or train tickets out of state.
  • Working with local providers and LDH; we will assist members of the homeless population who need medical and or mental health treatment.
  • Our administration will be working with stakeholders around the state to enact legislative reforms that should produce the framework needed to properly move people from homelessness to housing in a coherent, stair stepped plan.
