Submitted by Louisiana State Senator Blake Miguez of District 22

Senate Bill 379, aimed at stopping the installation of speed-monitoring cameras on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, passed unanimously in the Senate Committee on Transportation. My goal is to prioritize safety and the presence of law enforcement over revenue from speed cameras. This bill ensures that the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, the only bridge in Louisiana targeted for speed revenue generation, focuses on true safety measures.

We believe in the importance of having law enforcement officers on the bridge, whose discretion and ability to establish probable cause are essential in combating serious crimes such as drug and sex trafficking and in identifying unsafe vehicles. Real safety involves human judgment, not automated penalties in the mail.

Real justice means facing your accuser directly and knowing immediately if you’ve violated the law, not finding out through a ticket in the mail weeks later. With SB 379, we’re reinforcing our commitment to our citizens’ safety and upholding our legal system’s integrity.
