Submitted by United States Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana

WASHINGTON (December 5, 2024)  U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) today applauded the passage of his bill to provide tax relief for Americans impacted by Hurricanes Francine and Ida. The bill would allow Hurricane Ida victims and victims of other Presidentially-declared major natural disasters to deduct qualified disaster-related personal casualty losses from their income, even when taking the standard deduction. The Senate passed the bill through unanimous consent and now goes to the president’s desk to be signed into law.

“Three years after Hurricane Ida and months after Hurricane Francine hit Louisiana, communities are still recovering, and every bit helps,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We are one step closer to providing more resources to Louisianans who need that money to rebuild their lives.”

Additionally, it would repeal the rule requiring that losses exceed 10% of adjusted gross income.

This legislation is part of Cassidy’s continued effort to support the people of Louisiana affected by Hurricane Ida and builds upon his previous work to support disaster victims. Cassidy secured the same tax relief in 2020 to help Hurricane Laura victims and in 2017 for Louisianans impacted by the Great Floods of 2016.

Cassidy’s legislation was passed as part of a larger tax package, which also included a bill to provide tax relief for wildfire survivors who have received compensation for losses and damages suffered during a Presidentially-declared disaster, which Cassidy supported. The package also included relief for the victims of East Palestine railroad tragedy.
