Submitted by United States Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana

WASHINGTON (September 19, 2024) – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) issued the following statement after the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed their bipartisan, bicameral Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) by a voice vote.

“After the Senate overwhelmingly passed COPPA 2.0 in July, today’s Energy and Commerce Committee vote to advance our commonsense legislation is an important step forward. With kids and teens facing a mental health crisis driven, in part, by Big Tech, it is past time that Congress delivers for parents and children across this country. We look forward to working with our House colleagues to enact strong online privacy protections for young people into law.”

Background

In July, the U.S. Senate passed the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act, which included COPPA 2.0, by a 91-3 vote.
