Lafayette, LA (February 27, 2025) – Roughly one-in-ten auto insurance claims in the U.S. may involve some form of fraudulent activity.

Deputies and detectives with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office remind all drivers to share the road safely, or the damages could hurt every driver behind the wheel. When ‘brake checking’, ‘sudden stop schemes’ and ‘crash for cash’ maneuvers lead to false auto insurance claims, insurance premiums for all drivers are significantly impacted.

Beyond the hike in premium prices, auto insurance fraud is also a serious felony crime. Violators could face up to five years in prison or fines of up to $5,000—and in Lafayette Parish, these crimes will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

So, take the high road, and commit to cruising through 2025 safely.
