Broussard, LA (June 16, 2025) – The City of Broussard has installed crosswalk lights and painted new (or updated) crosswalk stripes at select intersections to improve pedestrian safety. These enhancements are at the following intersections:

  • South Morgan Street at Robicheaux Road
  • South Morgan Street at Barksdale Drive

Pedestrian crosswalks are important for several key reasons:

(AI prepared the reasons below)

Safety

  • Crosswalks provide a designated and visible area for pedestrians to cross the street, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Marked crosswalks often include safety features like flashing lights, signs, or signals to alert drivers.

Traffic Organization

  • Crosswalks help regulate where people cross the road, reducing random or unexpected pedestrian movement that can disrupt traffic flow.

Accessibility

  • Crosswalks are essential for people with disabilities, seniors, and children, especially when paired with curb ramps, tactile paving, and signals.

Encourages Walking

  • When people feel safe walking, they are more likely to do so. This promotes a healthier lifestyle and reduces vehicle congestion.

Legal Protection

  • Crosswalks establish pedestrian right-of-way in many jurisdictions, offering legal protection and clarifying responsibilities for both drivers and walkers.

In short, pedestrian crosswalks create safer, more walkable communities and support a balanced transportation system.
