LAFAYETTE, LA (May 30, 2024) – This year, personal injury attorney Glenn Armentor continued his mission of providing financial aid to students in need by naming four recipients of the 2024 Glenn Armentor $10,000 “Pay It Forward” Scholarship of Excellence.
The “Pay It Forward” Selection Committee is comprised of several Acadiana community members who are passionate about the pursuit of education. After deliberating over many deserving applicants, the Committee selected four high school seniors in April: Lola Bowen (Erath High School), Hermione Mayfield (Crowley High School), David Tran (Abbeville High School) and Emily Bourque (Acadiana High School).
The press conference honoring this year’s recipients of the “Pay It Forward” Scholarship will take place on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., hosted at the historic Good Hope Hall, home of the Glenn Armentor Law Corporation, located at 300 Stewart Street in Lafayette. Each student will be honored with a scholarship certificate and “Pay It Forward” Lifetime pin.
Many of these young men and women have experienced obstacles and setbacks, both financial and emotional, that many adults have not overcome. Despite such challenges, these amazing students have maintained a GPA of 3.5 to 4.0. Even those with a stable upbringing have trouble achieving what these students have already accomplished. “They will have a chance to do the things that I’m doing now, assisting ‘at risk’ young people without the funds to attend college, to enter university studies for which they are academically gifted. All of them have an opportunity, as a result, to pay it forward themselves,” said Glenn Armentor.
“In the early years of the ‘Pay It Forward’ Scholarship, many people criticized our support for these students as a lawyer advertisement, thinking that ‘Pay It Forward’ was all about advertising The Glenn Armentor Law Corporation,” added Armentor. “I think most people now realize that our long-term commitment is there … that the dedication to ‘Pay It Forward’ is all-encompassing for me and my law firm.”
About the “Pay It Forward” Scholarship of Excellence
The Glenn Armentor “Pay It Forward” Scholarship is in its 15th year and has contributed over $860,000 in tuition and program costs for students attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, South Louisiana Community College and Louisiana State University Law School.
The scholarship is given annually to at-risk young men and women who display the spirit, work ethic and character that shows the student is deserving of a chance for a better future, as well as adults in need who are facing exceptional hardship. The scholarships are awarded by an independent panel of community educators and leaders based on a combination of attributes including student performance, drive, ability, need and desire to seek a college degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
In his formative years, Glenn Armentor could easily have served as the poster child for at-risk kids in Acadiana. Lax efforts in primary school, run-ins with the law, a quick temper and being raised in abject poverty all contributed to putting him on a path to self-destruction. Luckily, a handful of individuals stepped in before it was too late. With their help, Glenn found a newfound spark of optimism and worked offshore to put himself through law school. Later, he opened his own firm.
Today, his law practice is thriving with a comprehensive team of 10 attorneys and 40 staff members, who help protect the rights of thousands who have encountered misfortune in Acadiana. He has also been recognized as the Best Lawyer in Acadiana 13 out of 14 years by public vote through the Times of Acadiana’s “Best Of” Competition!
Even with success, Glenn Armentor has not forgotten those early years. He feels eternally indebted to the friends, mentors, neighbors and strangers who stepped in to help change his life. That’s why he created the Glenn Armentor “Pay It Forward” Scholarship of Excellence – to pay their kindness forward.
Educators throughout Louisiana are urged to submit the names of high school students that meet the basic requirements of the program for future awards. “We’re not looking for Donations. We’re looking for names!”, says Armentor’s 30-minute video on The Pay It Forward Scholarship, entitled Poverty / Potential – III.
