LAFAYETTE, LA (February 11, 2025) – The Louisiana Department of Education announced today that Louisiana is leading the nation in academic recovery, ranking first in reading and second in math based on data from 2019 to 2024. The Education Recovery Scorecard, a study by Harvard and Stanford University, highlights Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) students’ exceptional growth, surpassing pre-pandemic achievement levels by 40% in math and 75% in reading.

Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. praised the district’s educators and students for their resilience and dedication.

“Lafayette Parish’s academic recovery outpaces other districts in the state and nation, in part, because we worked diligently during and immediately following the pandemic to keep students in the classroom. Face-to-face learning is essential to student growth, and our commitment to in-person instruction has been a key factor in helping students not only recover but surpass pre-pandemic achievement levels,” said Touchet.

The report also underscores Louisiana as the only state where the average student has fully recovered from pandemic-related learning loss. Lafayette Parish students outpaced the state’s overall recovery rate, which averaged 2% in math and 28% in reading.

This achievement reinforces LPSS’s commitment to academic excellence and the effectiveness of targeted interventions to ensure student success.
