Lafayette Parish, LA (February 2, 2026) – The Lafayette Parish School System will highlight literacy and hands-on learning with two special events taking place Thursday, February 5.
Book Giveaway & Author Visits
District 9 School Board Member Jeremy Hidalgo has purchased books for first-grade students at elementary schools across his district. Author Jeanette Weiland will visit each campus to personally deliver the books and read with students.

Cuisine du Jardin School Garden Initiative — Cook-Off Winning Meal Luncheon
The Cuisine du Jardin School Garden Initiative Cook-Off Winning Meal Luncheon will be held Thursday, February 5, from 10:50–11:50 a.m. at Martial Billeaud Elementary School.
During the luncheon, LPSS will serve the winning meal from the 2025 cook-off to all faculty, staff, and students at the school. Teams competing in the cook-off included youth participants and a coach, each paired with a local chef and an elected official. Teams were challenged to create a balanced MyPlate meal using produce grown in their school gardens.
These events underscore LPSS’s commitment to literacy, nutrition education, and experiential learning for students across the district.
