LAFAYETTE, LA (July 15, 2024) – A new law allowing retired teachers to be reemployed during a critical shortage is now in effect. Educators would not risk suspension or reduction of their retirement benefits if they return to the classroom. The legislation outlines the conditions under which a teacher may reenter the workforce.

  • Critical shortage positions may be full-time or half-time, including classroom teachers, speech therapists, and school counselors.
  • Retirees and their employers will contribute to the retirement system during reemployment, but no additional service credit or retirement benefits will accrue during this period.
