Lafayette, LA – At 5:03 a.m. on May 11, 2023, Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 800 block of Omega Drive after receiving a 911 call from a neighbor. The neighbor was out exercising and noticed smoke in the area. As he approached the home, the occupants were outside and heavy smoke was coming from the rear of the single-family dwelling. All occupants were accounted for and unharmed. He immediately called 911.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within 3 minutes of dispatch. The back of the home was in flames. Crews quickly began extinguishing the fire. The fire spread to the attic and the second floor of the dwelling. The dwelling sustained heavy fire damage.

At least 6 individuals occupied the home. No injuries have been reported. According to of the occupants, they were awakened by another occupant informing them of the fire. They escaped through the rear door.

Fire investigators determined the fire originated in a room connected to the home’s exterior. The construction design of the attached room allowed for the fire to spread easily to the attic of the main dwelling. The dwelling did not have any electrical services.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
