Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed in the United States on the last Monday of May each year. It originated in the years following the American Civil War and was initially known as Decoration Day.

The purpose of Memorial Day is to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by those who have given their lives in military service. It is a time for Americans to remember and honor the bravery and selflessness of fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, where they may place flags or flowers on the graves of military personnel.

It’s important to note that while Memorial Day honors and remembers those who have died in service to the nation, Veterans Day, observed on November 11th each year, is dedicated to expressing gratitude to all veterans, including those still alive.
