BATON ROUGE, La. (Jan. 15, 2024 11:42 p.m.) – The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) staff continue to apply salt and de-icing agents to bridges across the state. However, the staff and Motorist Assistance Patrol personnel who are on the roads have reported that roadway conditions are deteriorating and driving conditions are poor across the state. People who are unnecessarily on the roadway pose a risk to workers, emergency personnel, and to themselves.
Because of the deteriorating conditions, it is advised that no one drives unless absolutely necessary. If you must drive, take the responsibility to ensure you and others are safe.
Drivers should not be on the roadway during hazardous driving conditions.
DOTD urges motorists to stay off the roads during hazardous driving conditions. DOTD will do everything it can to keep priority routes open in the event of freezing rain, sleet, or snow and will prioritize the maintenance and opening of routes based on traffic volumes. During winter weather conditions, motorists should adhere to the following driving safety tips:
– Drive slowly and carefully.
– Avoid driving while distracted.
– Always allow for extra driving time.
– Avoid using cruise control.
– Reduce speeds when visibility is low.
– Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles.
– Always wear your seatbelt.
– Be on the lookout for DOTD crews and other emergency responders and their equipment.
– Remember that it’s unlawful and unsafe to drive around a road closed barricade for any reason.
– Make sure you have blankets or something to keep you warm, water and snacks in case you get stranded for an extended period of time.
