The Lafayette Police Department is putting on a citizen academy starting this summer. The Citizens Academy is a program designed to offer residents insight into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community. Participants will meet one evening a week for ten weeks. Participants will learn about virtually every aspect of an officer’s job, including recruiting, administration, patrol operations, traffic enforcement, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), communications, hostage negotiations, crime scene investigations, etc.

The citizen academy will be held every Wednesday evening from June 5, 2024, to August 7, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The academy will be held at the Lafayette Police Department, 900 East University Avenue in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants must be able to pass a background inquiry and must be eighteen years old.
The Lafayette Police Department is now accepting applications. Potential candidates whose names pass the background inquiry are then selected by lottery. The class size is set for twenty (20) participants. For those interested, come by the station and pick up an application, which will be located in the lobby area.

The deadline to turn in applications is May 10, 2024. Please submit a copy of your ID/Driver’s license with your application.
