LCG Encourages Community to Clean Out Clutter and Dispose Responsibly at Upcoming Environmental Events

LAFAYETTE, LA (October 18, 2024) – Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG)’s Environmental Quality Division is hosting two upcoming events aimed at promoting environmental safety and sustainability: Paper Shredding Day on November 16 and Household Hazardous Waste Day on November 23. Both events are free to residents of the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas.

Paper Shredding Day: November 16, 2024 | 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Residents can bring confidential documents for secure shredding at Paper Shredding Day on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Robicheaux Recreation Center (1919 Eraste Landry Road).

By shredding sensitive documents, participants reduce the risk of identity theft while also ensuring that shredded paper is recycled responsibly.

Important Guidelines:

  • Documents must be free of binders and clips, but stapled papers are acceptable.
  • Limit of 3 kitchen-size garbage bags per household.
  • Only personal and sensitive documents will be accepted; business documents, magazines, books, and newspapers will not be accepted.

Household Hazardous Waste Day: November 23, 2024 | 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Residents can safely dispose of hazardous household materials at Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Northgate Mall, 1800 NE Evangeline Thruway (Enter from Castille Avenue).

Improper disposal of household chemicals can contaminate the air, water, and land, and endanger waste collection staff. To help keep Lafayette safe and clean, residents are encouraged to dispose of items such as:

Accepted Items:

  • Alkaline Batteries
  • Chemical Cleaners
  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Gasoline
  • Herbicides
  • Mercury Thermometers
  • Paint & Paint Products
  • Paint Thinner & Stripper
  • Pesticides
  • Photographic Chemicals
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Stains
  • Turpentine

Items NOT Accepted:

  • Appliances, Furniture, TVs, and CRT Monitors
  • Office Copiers and Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
  • Toner/Ink Cartridges, GPS Devices, MP3/DVD Players
  • Digital Cameras, Stereo Equipment, Fire/Smoke Detectors
  • Automotive or Rechargeable Batteries, Motor Oil, PCB Oil
  • Antifreeze, Commercial Waste, Compressed Gas Cylinders
  • Medical Waste, Medicine, Radioactive Material, Explosives

In addition to hazardous materials, electronics such as computer hardware, accessories, laptops, etc. will also be accepted.
