LAFAYETTE, LA (December 18, 2024) – J. Wallace James Elementary successfully resumed normal operations following a brief evacuation at 2:00 this afternoon due to a gas line break. School officials acted swiftly to ensure the safety of students and staff, evacuating the building as a precaution.

The gas line was promptly capped, and HazMat officials thoroughly inspected the school. After confirming there was no lingering gas, the building was deemed safe for reentry. Classes resumed, and dismissal will proceed without disruption.

The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Lafayette Fire Department for its swift response and resolution of the issue. We also thank parents, staff, and first responders for their patience and cooperation during this situation. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priorities.
