LAFAYETTE, LA (January 4, 2025) – At 5:11 p.m. yesterday, Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 400 block of Saint Catherine Street. The homeowner called 911 to report the patio was on fire. Firefighters arrived, and heavy smoke came from behind the dwelling. Emergency crews discovered the patio on fire and flames advancing to the interior of the dwelling. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, saving the dwelling from further damage.

Fire officials determined the fire originated on the patio in a bucket used to dispose of cigarette butts and other combustibles. An improperly discarded cigarette ignited combustible material, which spread to the patio furniture. No injuries were reported. The fire was ruled an accident.
