Lafayette, LA (April 10, 2025) – The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) is promoting seatbelt use among pickup truck drivers and passengers through a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) to participate in the Buckle Up In Your Truck campaign, a traffic safety initiative. The campaign will run from April 19 to April 27, 2025, with enhanced enforcement patrols to encourage all motorists to buckle up, especially in trucks, where seatbelt use is often lower.

Buckle Up In Your Truck is part of a statewide effort supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to address safety concerns among truck occupants, who are statistically less likely to wear seatbelts and are at higher risk of severe injury or fatality in crashes. During this period, LPSO deputies will focus on enforcing seatbelt laws for all drivers and passengers, with a particular emphasis on ensuring safety among truck occupants.

Statistics show that pickup truck occupants are among the least likely to wear seatbelts, particularly in rural areas where crash risks are higher. This campaign aims to reduce fatalities and injuries through enforcement and education, helping to keep Lafayette Parish roadways safer for everyone.
