LAFAYETTE, LA (September 6, 2024) – Photographer John Slaughter has been exhibiting photographs for nearly half a century. His books, published by UL Press, include Grand Coteau, Catahoula, and Marfa and the Mystique of Far West Texas. This exhibit features exclusively images of the Brown Pelican taken in Florida, California and Louisiana. Named the official Louisiana state bird in 1966, the brown pelican resides in salt water coastal marine habitats and is often caricatured for its unusual, prehistoric appearance. These photographs will reveal their beauty and amazing flying abilities.
This year marks artist Jesse Poimboeuf’s 53rd year exhibiting his work, which has been seen nationwide from galleries and alternative art spaces to museums such as the Hirshhorn in Washington D.C. The New Orleans native has lived in several parts of the United States including New York, Cincinnati, and Denver, and now calls Cecilia, Louisiana home. Operating in a studio on the banks of Bayou Teche, Poimboeuf said his work is inspired by the “relentlessly brutal beauty of nature” that is ever-moving, ever-changing in all its forms and permutations “of which we are a part of- not apart from.”
Poimboeuf has recently been working with Brian Kelly at UL Marais Press on a limited edition multi-color lithograph, which will be included in the show.
