LAFAYETTE, LA (June 19, 2024) – All Louisiana library systems are now required by law to implement options for restricted juvenile library card access. Act No. 436 of the 2023 Regular Session gives parents or guardians the option to decide what library materials and content their children can have access to.
On May 28, 2024, the Lafayette Public Library introduced new library card applications allowing parents, both in and out of parish, to grant their child restricted or unrestricted access. Restricted cards do not have access to adult materials nor to public computers that access the internet. Unrestricted Child Cards will allow minors to check out any materials in the library, including adult materials, and use library computers to access the internet. Library cards issued to minors prior to May 28, 2024, will still be valid to use at the library, but will be set to a restricted access level by default on August 7. Any library card that was authorized for unrestricted access after May 28, 2024, will maintain its unrestricted access level.
