Open Flames and Tailgating Safely

LAFAYETTE, LA – The Office of the Governor issued a Tailgate Fire Safety Guidance Wednesday regarding Tailgating Safely- No Open Flames. The guidance on tailgating safely and open flames is a public safety message advising residents participating in tailgating to consider the dangers of an open flame during this dry weather event. There’s an increase in fire risk at this time. The Governor’s office and fire service professionals understand the difficulty of stopping everyone from grilling and cooking outdoors, but asks those enjoying tailgating to refrain from using an open flame.

Keep in mind, you may be responsible for your actions for any damages resulting from an open flame. We ask that your strongly follow the message of TAILGATING SAFELY – NO OPEN FLAMES.

  • Embers from even small cooking fires can travel great distances and ignite dry brush nearby, so it’s not just about the condition of your immediate surroundings.
  • Cars and trucks should not be parked on dry grass, as tailpipes and other hot car parts can start a fire.
  • Dispose of cigarette butts safely, extinguish them before throwing away.
  • If towing, ensure that safety chains are properly secured and will not drag along, creating sparks that can ignite deadly fires.
  • If using a generator, do not place it on dry grass. When refueling, allow the generator to be powered down and cooled off for 20 minutes before adding fuel.
