Lafayette, LA – Lafayette firefighters responded to a house fire in the 1000 block of North Pierce Street at 2:24 a.m. this morning. The dwelling owner called 911 to report the living room on fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were coming from the front window and door of the dwelling. Two vehicles were also on fire under the carport. The fire was spreading to the home next door. First responders battled the fire for approximately twenty minutes before controlling it. The home and vehicles sustained heavy fire damage. The neighbor’s house suffered heat damage.

When emergency crews arrived, the homeowner, her son, and grandson were outside in the neighbor’s yard. The son stated that he was awakened by the heat and smoke from the fire. He noticed the curtains on fire. He alerted his mother and son.  They all exited the front door of the dwelling. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials determined that the fire originated in the living room. An electrical malfunction was the ignition source. An overloaded electrical circuit contributed to the fire. The cause of the fire was ruled an accident.
