ARREST MADE: UPDATE/CORRECTION: Drive-by Shooting Being Investigated by Lafayette Police

UPDATE – ARREST MADE: November 1, 2023, 1:14 p.m.

Lafayette, LA – On Monday, October 30, 2023, Agents with the United States Marshall Service Violent Offender Task Force (USMS VOTF) and Church Point Police Department located, arrested, and booked Jakyrick Charles on an active warrant for principal to second-degree murder.  Charles’ warrants stemmed from his involvement in a shooting that took place on October 7, 2023, on Hellen Street.

LAFAYETTE, LA – In regards to last night’s shooting, victim #1, who is identified as Devin McZeal has died as a result of his injuries sustained from the shooting. The original release advised that the incident was a drive-by shooting.  Further investigation showed that the incident initially took place in the 500 block of Hellen Street at a large block party.  The shooting was not a result of a drive-by, the shooters were on foot when the incident occurred.

LAFAYETTE, LA – Around 10:40 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, Lafayette Police responded to reports of “shots being fired” in the 700 block of Hellen Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victims were at a party in the 700 block of Hellen Street when an unknown vehicle passed and began shooting at individuals attending the party. Three victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds upon the arrival of officers. Officers began to perform lifesaving medical aid to one of the victims until he could be transported to a local hospital. All victims were transported to local hospitals. Victim #1 is in critical condition, juvenile victim #2 is in critical but stable condition, and victim #3 sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are currently on scene, actively working on the incident. More information will be released when available.
